There’s something truly magical about Spearfish Canyon in the winter. Okay… to be honest, it’s pretty amazing all year. Yet, the dramatic cliffs, winding roads, and snow-covered trees create an atmosphere that feels like a scene from a romantic movie. It’s no wonder so many couples are drawn to the canyon for their winter engagement sessions.

But here’s the honest truth: Spearfish Canyon in the winter can be unpredictable. Some days greet us with sunshine and blue skies, casting a warm glow over frost-covered pines. Other days, we’re caught in flurries or even sudden snowstorms that blanket the canyon in white. I never quite know what we’re going to get—and that’s part of the charm.
What to Expect + How to Make It Your Own
If you’re dreaming of a snowy, blustery backdrop for your engagement photos, it’s important to build some flexibility into your schedule. I always recommend having a few date options in mind, especially if you’re aiming for those magical flurry-filled photos. Weather in the canyon can shift quickly, and giving ourselves a little wiggle room can make all the difference between overcast and unforgettable.
Some of my favorite engagement sessions are the ones where couples include something they love doing together. Whether that’s sipping coffee, playing board games, or just cozying up with a blanket and hot cocoa, it makes the session feel more like a mini date than a photo shoot.
Take Julia + Asher, for example. They brought their favorite board games and a thermos of hot chocolate, turning their session into a sweet, snowy picnic. Not only did they stay warm and relaxed, but they also got to enjoy a moment that felt totally them.

Or Nicole + Jacob, who came prepared with donuts and coffee. Their casual breakfast-in-the-woods vibe made for the coziest photos and a truly memorable experience.

Beyond the beautiful scenery and sweet moments, engagement sessions are a great opportunity to get comfortable in front of the camera and build a relationship with your photographer (that’s me!). By the time your wedding day arrives, we’ve already laughed together, maybe tromped through some snowbanks, and built a level of trust that helps make your big day even more relaxed and natural.
In the end, your engagement session should feel like you. Whether it’s a snowy stroll through the canyon or a playful date with cocoa and donuts, let’s create something together that celebrates your connection, your story, and the season you’re in—whatever the weather decides to do that day.

When to Schedule Your Engagement Session
One of the most common questions I get is “When should we schedule our engagement session?” If you’re planning to use your engagement photos for save the dates, invitations, or other wedding stationery, I suggest booking your session 12–18 months before your wedding date. That gives us time to plan around ideal weather conditions, edit your photos, and still leave plenty of breathing room for your design and printing timeline.
