Amie and Shaun’s wedding at the historic Hotel Alex Johnson was a celebration of love, elegance, and timeless charm. This iconic venue in the hustle and bustle on main street in downtown Rapid City offered the perfect blend of vintage allure and modern amenities, and was truly the perfect setting.

If you know Amie and Shaun, you know they love a good cocktail, family and friends, and to have a good time. All of that was pretty evident throughout the day with their relaxed demeanor and the rolling laughs from all in attendance. There was a lot of emotion from family, and the ceremony was a perfect setting with the bride’s brother as the officiant. I always encourage any opportunity to include family or close friends in the ceremony, and what better way than to have one of them help you to say “I do!”?
The couple chose the Hotel Alex Johnson for its rich history and architectural beauty. Built in 1928, the hotel boasts Tudor Revival architecture, Native American motifs, and original features like a teepee-shaped chandelier and hand-drawn ceilings . These elements provided a stunning backdrop for their wedding, adding depth and character to every moment.
And honestly, it’s no surprise that this was the vibe they were going for. Remember their engagement session? If you don’t follow me on social, here’s a little refresher!

Their ceremony took place in one of the little conference rooms outside of the ballroom reception hall. The ballroom was finished with beautiful wooden beams and large windows that bathed the room in natural light (my favorite!!). It was a seamless continuation of the day’s elegance, with personalized décor and a menu tailored to their tastes

Tips for Planning a Wedding at Hotel Alex Johnson
If you’re considering the historic Hotel Alex Johnson for your wedding, here are some tips to help you plan an event as memorable as Amie and Shaun’s:
1. Embrace the Historic Charm
Leverage the hotel’s unique features—like the Native American chieftain sculptures and vintage chandeliers—to enhance your wedding theme. These elements add authenticity and a sense of grandeur to your celebration. (If you missed my last wedding here at the Alex, check it out to see how they used the ballroom and turned their winter experience into an elegant event!)
2. Utilize the Versatile Event Spaces
The hotel offers several event spaces, including ballroom, which can accommodate up to 300 guests . Choose a space that fits your guest list and desired ambiance. Two of the rooms can be opened together and combined into one to offer more seating as well. Ask about the Washington + Rushmore rooms.
3. Take Advantage of On-Site Amenities
From the AJ’s Wicked Salon & Spa for pre-wedding pampering to the Vertex Sky Bar for post-reception cocktails, the hotel provides numerous amenities to enhance your wedding experience. Pro-tip: even if you don’t drink, hit up the Vertex during your portrait session! Snuggling up by the fires and simply enjoying a moment alone is one of my favorite things to add into the timeline.

4. Coordinate with the Experienced Staff
The hotel’s professional event planning staff can assist with every detail, from selecting the perfect setting to customizing your catering menu. Their expertise ensures a smooth and stress-free planning process.
5. Consider Guest Accommodations
With a range of luxurious suites and rooms, your guests can enjoy comfortable accommodations on-site. This convenience is especially beneficial for out-of-town attendees. And don’t sleep on their presidential suite for getting ready! The space is quite open and spacious for the bridal party.
