These forgotten locations in the Spearfish Canyon are for the adventurous, the intentional, and the wilde-hearted romantics. When planning an engagement session in the Black Hills, you might picture Sylvan Lake or Mount Rushmore. But tucked deep within the winding curves of Spearfish Canyon are three often-overlooked gems that offer intimate moments, breathtaking views, and an experience that feels more like a date than a photoshoot. These engagement photo locations in Spearfish Canyon—roughlock falls, savoy pond, and eleventh hour—are ideal for couples who crave connection, quiet, and a little bit of adventure.
1. Roughlock Falls (But Not Where You Think)
Roughlock Falls is arguably the second best-known stop in the canyon, next to Bridal Veil Falls. To avoid the crowds, I guide couples past the main viewing deck and toward the lesser-known back pool. With a good pair of boots or water shoes, you can wade in together, creating a moment that’s both playful and personal. The water is cold, but the images—and the memories—are unforgettable.
And the drive there is just an added bonus! There are several pull-offs that offer spectacular views of the canyon scene.

2. Savoy Pond
Not far from the Latchstring and the canyon lodge, this serene little spot is often overlooked because it’s further into the canyon drive. But that’s what makes it special. Whether you’re skipping rocks, dancing at the edge of the water, or just wrapped up in each other as the sun rises over the canyon walls, Savoy Pond feels like your own private moment. There’s something cinematic about the way the light bounces off the water here—perfect for couples who want something simple but stunning. I mean LOOK AT THAT FOG!
This is my go-to spot when someone wants a unique view but isn’t quite up for a hike. One of the best parts of this location is it’s accessibility. Just off the side of Hwy14, it’s a great in-between stop to catch your breath (and maybe a few kisses) before heading to the next location.

3. Eleventh Hour
This cliffside lookout is for couples who don’t mind a little hike and a lot of wow. It’s not on any major map, and the trail isn’t well-marked—but that’s part of the charm. The payoff is an expansive view of the canyon that feels untouched and wild. For the bold and the brave, it’s the perfect place to pop champagne, lay out a blanket, and toast to forever.

For this location specifically, footwear matters. Choose comfort and grip over fashion, and change shoes up top if you want!

Making Your Engagement Photos a FULL Experience
The beauty of these engagement photo locations in Spearfish Canyon is that you don’t have to pick just one. I often build custom experiences that include all three. We’ll meet early, hike together, talk and laugh between locations, and turn your engagement shoot into a full-on memory-making story.
Want to bring a bottle of bubbly? Do it. Planning a surprise picnic or handwritten vows? Absolutely. These little moments help tell your story and give your photos depth and personality.
What to Wear: Style Tips for Sessions
Comfort is key – Choose shoes that can handle rocky paths or water crossings (you can always change into a cuter pair for close-ups).
Layers, always – Spearfish Canyon can be chilly in the morning and warm by mid-day. Earth tones, deep greens, burnt oranges, and denim all complement the natural palette.
Avoid bold patterns – The surroundings are already rich with texture. Neutrals or solid jewel tones let you be the focus.
Whether you’re hiking in, dancing by the pond, or soaking in the views from a canyon ridge, these locations are about more than photos—they’re about presence, partnership, and the kind of love that feels like home.
